Утратив самостоятельность, Дженис укрылась в собственном мире, поскольку не нашла в себе сил для борьбы с родительским неодобрением: только так она может обрести душевную независимость. Ее болезнь - не только психологическое явление; это явление социальное, и оно отражает противоречия внутри заблокированного общества, в котором неизбежное развитие и движение вперед затруднено психологическими и нравственными пережитками, устаревшим, но все же вредоносным для уязвимых людей пониманием авторитета и сыновнего (дочернего) послушания. «Классическое» лечение, через которое проходит героиня (Кеннет Лоуч обличает его с ледяной жестокостью), только обостряет болезнь, поскольку по своим целям и методам идентично тому же процессу, что вызвал недуг.На уровне формы в фильме ощущается тройное влияние: 1) документального кино («красной нити» английского кинематографа); 2) направления «синема-веритэ» (или т. н. «прямого кино»), частично основанного на сопоставлении, взаимопересечении различных интервью; 3) эстетики телеспектакля, где вымышленный сюжет обозначает реальную проблему. К слову, первоисточник - пьеса Мерсера - был написан для телефильма. Эти столь разные влияния приводят к тому, что фильм становится своеобразным досье, временным подведением итогов, анализом случая, последствия которого важнее, чем он сам. Кинематограф в данном случае служит всего лишь средством передачи мысли, которая одна составляет материал фильма, при том что объект этой мысли - т. е. частная история центрального персонажа - не создает вокруг себя подлинного повествовательного ряда и не существует на экране во всей своей полноте, зрелости и силе. Даже при том, что актеры работают удивительно мощно, комментарии и размышления бесконечно преобладают над действием. В драматургии фильма анализ вопроса «почему?» постоянно заслоняет собой визуальный ряд, отвечающий на вопрос «как?». Возможно, этот фильм, который можно назвать постросселлиниевским (имея в виду последний период творчества Росселлини), невольно, однако с чрезвычайной остротой ставит вопрос о том, не вошли ли мы в заключительную или даже в посмертную фазу кинематографа. Конечно, Семейная жизнь обладает своей специфической поэтикой: она твердой и, в то же время, нежной (тайно нежной) рукой очерчивает круг, в котором замкнута главная героиня; а замкнутость, заточение - основная тема творчества Лоуча. Чем более совершенным будет этот круг, тем сильнее будут выражаться размышления (а также чувства и возмущение) зрителя. Значит, не приходится удивляться тому факту, что фильм, созданный подобным образом, вызвал дискуссию, которая в перспективе будет иметь большее значение, нежели сам фильм. Но это киноисследование, этот киноанализ не может быть полным, пока пе найдет продолжения в чем-либо ином; так можно ли называть его кинематографом? Отметим, что в наши дни, когда достижения антипсихиатрии ставятся под большое сомнение (и когда статистически доказано, что развитие некоторых душевных недугов никак не связано с влиянием окружающей среды), этот программный фильм, чья программа уже устарела, ценен только лишь своей жесткостью и искренностью, которая ощущается прежде всего в работе актеров.
